Ten More Free Utilities For Your Computer

Some of the best things in computer software are free. There are many programs available that you can download and use right now for your computer without putting out any money.

The following is a list of ten categories of very popular programs that many people use every day and you can also.

1) Web Browsers – Mozilla Firefox V2 is an excellent web browser that is safer to use than IE7 (Internet Explorer 7) as it does not have the security attacks that IE7 has. There are an additional 1,000 plus free extensions that give you the ultimate customization for this browser.

Another good free browser is Opera. This is said to be the fastest of all common browsers. It does not have as many extensions as Firefox, but the standard features cover a lot of them. It is very safe and is standards compliant as is Firefox.

2) Anti-Virus Software -- AVG Antivirus 7 Free Edition is a very solid product that has been improved on since it came out in 1991. It automatically updates and takes care of your computer scanning everything including email. It is small and uses very little resources.

Avast is another antivirus program that has a media player type interface, but is equally as effective as AVG is. It does require periodic re-registrations that AVG does not.

3) Adware/Spyware/Scumware Removers – Microsoft’s Windows Defender is available as a free beta. It has protective capabilities that are solid. It does consume a lot of your processing power and must be run on a legal version of XP SP2.

Another choice is Spyware Terminator and it will work with all versions of Windows. It does have more protection against unknown threats than the MS product.

4) Browser Protection Utility – one called Sandboxie creates a “sandbox” that totally separates your online activities from all other parts of your computer. Anything you download is also kept separate from all your normal files, operating system and any other part of your computer. You can delete these files when done or you can clear them to be saved permanently. It only works on Windows 2000 or later.

Earlier Windows versions can use a program called SpywareBlaster that changes a few of the settings on your computer to prevent an infection from occurring. This program is free with manual updates or the update service cost you around $10 annually.

5) Firewalls – Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall is a great product except after the 30 trial is turned off it will ask you to buy it each time it starts, but this is a small price to pay for what it can do for free.

Another good firewall is the Comodo Firewall and it supports internet connection sharing that Kerio does not.

6) Trojan Scanner/Trojan Remover – AVG Anti-Spyware is a great program for anti-trojan and anti-spyware detection.

7) Rootkit Scanner/Removers – BlackLight will be free in beta form until the 1st of January. This is one of the simplest and most effective detectors available.

SysInternals RootkitRevealer is for the more experienced user and is harder to set up, but does an excellent job. It is a good idea to use more than one of these for overall detection.

8) Intrusion Prevention and Detection Utilities – Cyberhawk provides an additional layer of protection for your computer. It is somewhat annoying, but protects for free.

Blink Personal is a useful tool for the experienced users, but it is harder to set up and use than Cyberhawk

9) Anonymous Surfing Services – JAP is a great product to use to keep all your online activity anonymous.

Tor not only allows anonymous browsing but anonymous email, IM, P2P, and IRC chat. They do slow surfing some, but they work.

10) Software Suites – OpenOffice is a substitute for MS Office XP, Thunderbird for Outlook, The Gimp for Adobe Photoshop, 7-zip for WinZip and there are a lot more. You can have many of the features of some expensive programs without costing you anything.
