What Is ActiveX?

ActiveX is a widespread technology that was developed by Microsoft. It is used to create dynamic web pages, specifically enabling websites to perform actions similar to those of Microsoft applications. ActiveX also enables surfers to view Java applets, listen to sound, and view animations on web pages. ActiveX is usually used in conjunction with a variety of other scripting languages, such as Java, to produce highly dynamic and interactive web pages and applications. ActiveX, in actual fact, is the culmination of two separate Microsoft technologies called Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) and Component Object Model (COM).

What Does ActiveX Do?

ActiveX essentially allows applications written in different languages to communicate with one another via a network such as the Internet. Microsoft Internet Explorer allows users to view the results of ActiveX use in the shape of dynamic web pages, online applications, sound, and animations. However, it is possible to activate and deactivate ActiveX controls within your browser. If you are struggling to view the dynamic components of sites and pages then there is a reasonable chance that this is the problem.

What Are ActiveX Controls?

Your browser specifically uses these ActiveX controls to enable you to view the dynamic components but the controls are only one aspect of ActiveX technology. Problems can occur with ActiveX for a number of reasons, all of which should be fairly simple and quick to resolve. Potentially, any connection to the Internet can cause problems. This not only includes connecting via Internet Explorer but using any software or application that needs a live Internet connection.

Site Or Application Specific Problems

If you experience problems logging onto a specific site then it could be that the site itself or the host is having problems. Initially you should check the FAQ section of the site or contact the technical support desk for more information. Ensure that you have full details of the error you are receiving. This should include information pertaining to exactly what you were doing when the error occurred, the precise error message you received, and the effects of that error. Alternatively, it is possible that your browser is not currently supporting ActiveX controls.

Changing Your Internet Explorer Options

In your Internet browser page select “Tools” and then “Internet Options”. Select the “Security” tab and click the “Custom Level…” button. Scroll down to the “ActiveX controls and plug-ins” section where there are five further options. First, ensure that the “Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins” option is checked as “Enabled” and do the same for “Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting”. This should ensure that your browser would now run all ActiveX controls that are signed as being safe. You may also enable the “Download signed ActiveX controls”. The remaining options relate to unsigned and potentially unsafe ActiveX controls.

ActiveX And Internet Security

There have recently been a large number of problems with insecure ActiveX controls that have led to security problems. These problems can directly attack your existing ActiveX controls or further sections of your system so care should be taken with any unsigned controls. Consider placing the remaining selections at “Prompt” to ensure that you only enable controls from pages and sites that you trust.

ActiveX Error Causes

Many ActiveX errors are caused by specific programs or websites. While these are impossible to fix generically, you will usually receive an error message that gives the precise reason for the error. Check the FAQ page of the site or company in question to find if this problem has been reported before. If it has then there is likely to be a solution to your exact problem. If you can’t find anything useful then do contact the support desk with the full details. Even if they have no knowledge of how to solve the problem immediately, they should be able to find a way to help. They will also have this information to hand should anybody else suffer similar problems.

ActiveX Error Conclusion

ActiveX is an invaluable technology that was designed by Microsoft. It incorporates components of web pages that are written in different languages and enables highly dynamic sites. While it provides the capability to view graphics, listen to sound, and interact with pages it can also cause problems in several ways. Enabling or disabling ActiveX controls is done through the Internet Explorer Options, also allowing for a greater or reduced level of security when surfing the Internet.
