Online security is a bigger consideration than ever before for all Internet users. It is an unfortunate fact, but a fact nonetheless, that every time we long onto the Internet, open an email, or read an instant message we are putting our computers and possibly ourselves at risk. Viruses have long been the scourge of the Internet but hackers and third parties are finding new and even more damaging methods to intrude on our privacy and threaten our security every time we log onto our browser, email client, or messenger. Fortunately, as viruses, spyware, rootkits, and other malware applications become more advanced so too do the tools we have available to counteract them.

What F-Secure Has To Offer
F-Secure Internet Security is a complete application that is designed to prevent infection from virus, spyware, and other malware via several routes. As well as having a powerful anti-virus and anti-spyware feature it also includes a firewall, anti-spam software and new technology called DeepGuard. While the majority of this software uses definition databases that are regularly and quickly updated and downloaded automatically by the software, DeepGuard technology offers even greater protection. This protection not only protects you from known threats but it also prevents attacks from viruses and other malicious malware applications that have yet to be identified and recognized.

Cons

One thing I didn't particularly appreciate is that when first downloaded, the F-Secures installer requires uninstalling conflicting applications. On my machine I was warned that Spybot Search and Destroy and Webroots Spysweeper will need to be removed. F-secure offers to uninstall these apps for me then continue with its own install.

 

F-secure take note: I have SpySweeper and Spybot because I see value in them. I was hoping to try F-secure to see if it is a good application. Your value is yet to be proven. Unfortunately many people, myself included,  will abort your download right there and then!

What Is DeepGuard Technology?
DeepGuard constantly scans your system to look for any activity or software application that shows signs of being malware. Instead of comparing your computer to a virus definition database and looking only for known viruses it looks for any activity that is indicative of a virus or other malware. This level of security means that even if you haven’t yet downloaded all of the latest updates you can still surf the Internet and open email securely and safely. Zero-day threats are viruses that have literally just been released. No signature and no remedy is generally known for zero-day threats and so most anti-virus applications can not even detect them. The DeepGuard technology that F-Secure offers can do this.

The F-Secure Firewall
The firewall prevents hackers from being able to gain access to your system. This access will generally result in the theft of personal information and potentially even personal files. The final result of this can be absolutely devastating, especially if you use your computer for online banking or other payments. The firewall can be fully configured to allow Internet access when and where it is required but prevent any other access both incoming and outgoing.

Protecting Against Phishing Emails
Phishing is another recent addition to online security threats. Electronic personal identity theft is usually carried out using a mixture of email and website. Usually, victims receive an email that looks and reads as though it is from a bank or online service that they use. This email asks them to visit the site using the link provided and provide personal information. The link, though, points to a completely different site and the form collects your personal information for use by an unauthorized person. It is not uncommon to receive regular emails that appear to be from Ebay or PayPal with an incorrect link. Once you provide your username and password on the fake login screen you have essentially given out complete access to your account.
