Eliminate Pesttrap automatically with ParetoLogic Antispyware

Pesttrap Summary: As if spyware infections weren’t bad enough, add to that the humility of being conned into downloading a spyware removal tool only to find it’s actually a piece of nasty spyware in its own right!

Details: Pesttrap is one of several so called anti-spyware programs that promise to remove spyware from your system. Only Pesttrap isn’t what it seems to be. It supposedly finds an infection on your system and then attempts to extort a fee from you to remove the so called infection.

If you fell for the trap that Pesttrap set you up for, you have a file named Pesttrap.exe lurking on your system as well as numerous entries in your system registry. Using the “search tool” in Windows, you can perform a search for the Pesttrap.exe file.

If a file named Pesttrap.exe resides in your program files in a sub folder called Pesttrap, you are infected with this pesky program. Pesttrap is a spyware program that uses the ploy of false positives in order to trick unsuspecting users into purchasing the full version of their program.

For example, you may see a pop-up ad for a free spyware scan using Pesttrap, or you may download a “trial” version. The Pesttrap software will present a false positive indicating that you have spyware infections that Pesttrap can clean for you – for a price.

Pesttrap looks and feels like a legitimate spyware removal program. But looks can be deceiving – Pesttrap is a scam designed to trick you into thinking you have a spyware, or multiple spywares, infection. Pesttrap uses scare tactics to extort you into parting with your hard earned dollars.

Even if you don’t fall for the initial Pesttrap tricks, Pesttrap remains on your system and could hijack your desktop and display more pop-ups sending you to a bogus security center website.

Pesttrap is one of the clones of similar spyware programs such as Spysheriff.

Removing Pesttrap isn’t as simple as deleting Pesttrap.exe. You must also delete the dll files as well as the numerous Pesttrap entries in the system registry.

To remove this malicious program you can either download an automatic removal tool or do it yourself following these steps.

First, you’ll need to stop Pesttrap in its tracks. You can do this by stopping the Pesttrap system processes. Find and remove these files: Pesttrap.exe and uninstall.exe.

Next, using the registry editor, remove the following registry values:
Microsoft specific values – (Under HKEY _CURRENT_USER)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\currentversion\run_Pesttrap

Pesttrap specific values – (Under HKEY _CURRENT_USER)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\Pesttrap, and in that same folder remove:
\Pesttrap\ie_security
\Pesttrap\ie security\blockedlocations
\Pesttrap\process security
\Pesttrap\process security\policies
\Pesttrap\process security\policies\restricted
\Pesttrap\scan
\Pesttrap\system security
\Pesttrap\updates

Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE delete:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\

currentversion\uninstall\Pesttrap

NOTE: Whenever you access and use the registry editor you run the risk of causing more damage to your system – it can be dangerous. Always make a backup before making changes to the system registry. To access the registry editor in Windows XP, go to the Start button, then Run, then type in “regedit”. The registry editor will appear. Click on the folder (such as HKEY _CURRENT_USER) as specified in the instructions above and locate and delete the entries noted.

After working with the registry editor, search for and remove the following dll files: Pesttrap.dvm, Pesttrap.Ink, base.avd, base001.avd, base002,avd, removed.wav, notfound.wav and found.wav.

While Pesttrap can be removed manually, using the registry editor always poses its own risks. The use of an automatic Pesttrap removal tool eliminates the need to work within the system registry and ensures that you don’t accidentally overlook an important Pesttrap file to remove. We recommend and use ParetoLogic AntiSpyware.
