What Is The Windows Registry? The Windows registry is a database that contains all the information relevant to you and your computer, software, and hardware. When you attempt to open a program, that program will revert to the registry for the relevant information. All your personal settings are stored in here for the majority of software. All installations and uninstallations also have an effect on the Windows registry. In a lot of cases though, as the Windows registry changes it becomes more susceptible to corrupt, missing, or duplicate entries. All of these can cause problems within the registry and subsequently within files, software, and even Windows itself. The Problem With Installing And Uninstalling ProgramsInstalling and uninstalling files causes major changes within the registry entries. As these changes are made there are several ways that problems can occur. Invalid ReferencesWhen entries are deleted from the registry this doesn’t necessarily mean that all the references, links, or shortcuts are cleaned up within other registry entries. Some software demands many references from other files and even other processes and programs. Without careful searching through registry entries, the registry editor that is installed on your system is not likely to help resolve these issues. Duplicated EntriesWith so many files on your computer and so many registry entries required for each file it is easy to see exactly how quickly the registry can become over populous. Initially this is unlikely to cause a problem but over time it can cause two fairly major problems that you need to resolve as soon as possible. As the registry fills with more and more entries your computer performance will suffer badly and your computer will run slowly, applications may take longer to load and, eventually, Windows can freeze. A lot of entries in the registry also means that files and references have more chance of conflicting with one another. Missing Entries Another problem that may occur is a deleted or missing registry entry. These are potentially even more harmful than duplicate entries. While a missing entry will not take up disk space, your system will attempt to find the entry without success. Any time this missing entry is referenced your system will take longer to perform the required action and, in most cases, will fail. Again, early symptoms of missing registry entries include the failure of files or applications to open. Processes will become slower to run and it is likely you will begin to receive Windows error messages. Potential Problems You Might Suffer All problems within the registry will at least affect the performance of your computer. Initially this will include slow responding requests, poor performing applications, and a general slow down of your computer. This is because most problems either directly use system resource, i.e. hard drive space, or cause systems to run slowly or not at all and slow down the general operating speed of your PC. Error messages will start to appear and eventually fatal errors can start to really damage your desktop. When your system cannot cope with the errors, it will give up until you resolve the problem. Diagnose Registry Problems With The Free RegCure ScanThe RegCure free scan enables you to completely scan your registry and find any problems. Using this powerful registry-scanning tool you can quickly determine whether your computer registry requires any maintenance. RegCure scans quickly but efficiently looking for any and all problems.
