French is the most difficult European language to apprehend and, vernacularly, one of the most impossible in the world. In which case, thank goodness for a course like Rocket French, the freshest and most stimulating of French language learning products on the market.

Time is precious and that is just where Rocket French steps unabashedly up to the mark. It so hones in on the essentials of foreign language learning and permanent assimilation that it is possible to be speaking with native Frenchmen and Frenchwomen within a matter of a few days.

The French, especially following occupation in the Second World War, are naturally suspicious of anyone not speaking their native tongue. That is not to say they are not accommodating; it simply means that they like to see an effort made to converse in their dearly beloved Gallic dialect. Shopkeepers and businessmen alike will become far more affable and helpful the more you can continue in the 'language of love'. The French, rightly, cherish and honor the richness and historicity of their full-bodied words ('paroles' or 'mots').

Even until recently French boys and girls were limited to a certain spectrum of possibilities for their Christian names, which also involved celebrating their 'Name Days' on certain dates of the year. The amour for the native tongue has never been stronger: legislation has been passed to allow only 20% of English words on public broadcasting, be that radio or television.

As a consequence, the time to learn French has never been riper. Speak a little French, or improve it to a level of fluency, and you will have a direct route into one of the most ancient but also advanced cultures in Europe.

For the dilettante, France boasts a veritable plethora of history: intrigue, uprisings, empire building, philosophy, art, film, architecture, literature and pre-historic remains. Never speak French and you lose half your being; understand French and you regain your soul.

For the businessman, in spite of the inexorable surge of English as the lingua franca – and that is an irony – the reception of someone trying to do business in France without some French can be very stony. Blustering blithely in English, whatever the accent, is simply not acceptable. Whichever way you look at it, you will always prosper far better in business when you can communicate with your correspondent in his or her own language.

All of which leaves us, assuming we have somewhat limited levels of knowledge of French, with the choice of what course to undertake to give us the best results at the most effective price.

With any linguistic course it is essential to weigh content and efficacy against price and delivery. Content basically relates to the level of proficiency a course is designed to take you. Efficacy means: how long will it take me learn and how well is it geared towards giving the will and sense of fun to continue up to where I want to be. Price means price and delivery means: is there a money-back guarantee?
