About Excel: Microsoft Excel is a powerful spreadsheet program that’s popular for business uses. As part of the Microsoft Office suite, Excel shares numerous components with the other programs in the suite, making it vulnerable to the occasional program error.

Repairing Excel Program Errors: Microsoft includes a built-in repair utility for detecting and repairing many MS Excel program errors. This utility is designed to fix program errors but not file errors. If you’re experiencing trouble with a particular Excel file causing errors, then Detect and Repair is not the appropriate solution to your errors.

You can find Detect and Repair through the help menu of each of the MS Office programs. This is a big help because if the MS Excel program error is causing immediate shutdowns, or if the program won’t open at all, you can still reach Detect and Repair from one of the other programs. Likewise, you can reach it from the installation discs if none of your MS Office programs are functioning.

You need to have your original Excel or MS Office installation discs available as well as the CD Key. Detect and Repair first scans your system for invalid registry entries and missing or corrupt files. If it finds a missing or corrupt file, it repairs it by replacing it with the original file found on the installation disc. If you don’t have the installation discs available, this procedure will not work.

After clicking on “Detect and Repair” from the help menu, a dialogue box opens. Read this box carefully. The wording is a little confusing. It asks you if you want to keep or discard your custom settings like the office assistant, program shortcuts and custom toolbars. Make sure to read it carefully and mark your choice in the appropriate box.

Once you’ve made your decision, the Windows Installer activates and begins the process. You didn’t hit the wrong button nor is it reinstalling the actual program but the process does look identical to an installation. Relax, it is only affecting the damaged files, your data is safe and sound. It won’t overwrite your valuable MS Excel spreadsheets.

If it finds damaged or missing files, the Detect and Repair will instruct you to insert the installation discs. From there, it will replace the damaged files and will likely you to key in your CD Key. Simply follow the prompts and you will be done. Excel should now function properly.

If the Detect and Repair utility didn’t solve your Excel program errors, your next step should be to try a complete reinstall of the program. You will definitely lose your custom settings but your data files will remain untouched.

Here you will find their vast repository of information about Microsoft program errors in the area called the knowledge base. You can either search by specific product such as MS Excel or you can search the entire scope of Microsoft products. The search bar lets you enter your exact Excel program error. This way, the results display only the pages that have the MS Excel program error that you are researching. A typical knowledge base article lists the symptoms of the Excel program error, behaviors, reasons why it’s behaving this way and offers a possible solution.
