Fixing Norton Antivirus 2005 Internal Software Errors: Creative Mediasource and System Files

If you have just installed Norton Antivirus 2005 and right-click on Enable Auto-Protect only to get an error that looks like this:

"Norton Antivirus has encountered an internal program error"

then you may be experiencing this difficulty because of an interface problem with a program that is automatically installed with the Soundblaster Audigy sound card, Creative Mediasource Go!. This error only occurs when restarting the computer, though, so it isn't hard to fix. If you have this sound card installed, follow the instructions below. If not, skip them and begin at the paragraph starting with “If you have Windows XP, read on.” The goal of the following directions is to stop Creative Mediasource from starting when your computer does, thereby preventing the interface error.

Preventing Creative Mediasource Go!

From Starting During Restart

  • Click Start in the lower left hand corner of your screen, then Programs.
  • From the menu that pops out, click Creative, then Creative MediaSource Go!, then Creative MediaSource Go! Again.
  • Right-click on any part of Creative MediaSource Go!. Click Close in the window that pops up.

Sometimes a program called Creative Remote Center is installed along with Creative Mediasource Go! If you have this program installed, skip the rest of this paragraph. If you don't have this program installed, skip the next set of directions.

At this point, restart your computer. If you still encounter a program error while attempting to use Norton Antivirus, then skip the rest of this paragraph. If Norton runs without a hitch, then follow the steps above to access the Creative Mediasource Go! to open it again.

This time, don't right-click, and don't click Close. You must follow these instructions exactly whenever you restart your computer in order to prevent Norton system errors.

Preventing Creative RemoteCenter From Starting During Restart

  • If you have Windows XP, click Start, then Control Panel, then Remote Control Center.
  • If you have Windows 2000, click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel, then Remote Control Center.
  • A box next to Enable RemoteCenter should be checked. Uncheck it.
  • There should be a Show RemoteCenter icon with a check next to it. Uncheck this too.
  • Also uncheck the box nex to Show RemoteCenter splash screen when RemoteCenter is started.

At this point, restart your computer. If you still encounter a program error while attempting to use Norton Antivirus, then skip the rest of this paragraph. If Norton runs without a hitch, then follow the steps above to access the Remote Center and recheck each box you unchecked.

You must follow these instructions exactly whenever you restart your computer in order to prevent Norton system errors.

If you have Windows XP, read on. If not, skip this paragraph. The problem may not lie with Creative Mediasource Go! It may be that one or more Norton Antivirus program files are not set to run when you restart your computer.

Setting Norton Antivirus Program Files to Run on Restart

  • Click Start, then Run.
  • In the box that appears, type MSCONFIG, then press OK.
  • A System Configuration Utility should open. Click on the Services tab.
  • Make sure that the following items are listed and that the boxes next to them are checked.
  • Script Blocking Service (If Norton Antivirus came with your computer, this option may not appear. Don't worry about it if so).
    SAVScan
    Symantec Core LC
    Symantec Event Manager
    Symantec Settings Manager
    Norton AntiVirus Auto Protect Service
    Symantec Network Drivers Service
    Symantec SPBBCSvc

Norton AntiVirus Firewall Monitor Service (If Norton Antivirus Internet Security is installed on your computer, this may not appear. Don't worry about it if so).

Symantec Password Validation

If any of the files on this list are missing, this means that your version of Norton AntiVirus was not completely installed, or is corrupted. You need to remove and reinstall the program entirely. If the files are all present and accounted for, then continue following these instructions.

  • Click on the tab next to the Services tab you are in now – the Startup tab.
  • Make sure that the box next to ccApp is checked.
  • If ccApp is not on the list, this means that your version of Norton AntiVirus was not completely installed, or is corrupted. You need to remove and reinstall the program entirely. If all the above boxes were there but you had to manually check any of them, then
  • Click Apply.
  • Click Close.
  • Restart your computer.

If this does not solve the problem, or if all of the above boxes exist and were checked before you got to them, your problem lies elsewhere. Search for other solutions or contact a professional for assistance.
