Dr. Watson Errors
-
Windows XP is known for being
more stable than its predecessors and Dr. Watson is responsible for much of the
increased stability. Who is this Dr. Watson character and how does he make
Windows XP more stable?
Dr. Watson isn’t an actual person, rather he’s a utility that comes with Windows
XP. If you’ve ever worked on a pre-Windows XP machine, then you’re likely
familiar with system crashes and lost data. In the past, when Windows
encountered an error, all programs would crash and any unsaved data would be
gone for good. But Dr. Watson solves many of these problems by shutting down
only the offending program. Data from the offending program can still be lost so
“save your data often” still applies. Fortunately other open programs are not
affected by Dr. Watson’s actions.
In addition, Dr. Watson records information about the particular crash into a
log that can be sent to Microsoft or examined by a knowledgeable computer person
to learn about the root causes of the error in the first place.
When Dr. Watson detects an error, a gray dialogue box appears notifying you that
the program has encountered and error and will be shut down. You will see
buttons available that you can click to either view the details of the error or
send the report to Microsoft. Sending the report to Microsoft helps them to
learn what errors are occurring regularly with their products and ultimately
leads to patches and fixes.
While Dr. Watson can’t solve your computer problems, the information Dr. Watson
provides about the problems can certainly help in diagnosing the problem. Dr.
Watson runs automatically and will pop up whenever a program error occurs. You
can also run Dr. Watson from the Start menu if you want to do a quick check.
To
do this, go to the Start button, click “run” and type in: drwatson. For Windows
2000 or NT type in drwtsn32.
To view the log file that Dr. Watson maintains go to Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Microsoft\DrWatson\drwtsn32.log. The log file will open
in text editor such as NotePad or WordPad. Here you will see:
• Application exception occurred:
• Application and path
• PID number
• Date and time
• Exception number
• System information
• Task list
• Module list
• State dump for thread ID listed which includes register dump, disassembly of
surrounding code, stack back trace and raw stack dump.
• Symbol table
Much of the data is far more technical than the average computer user can
decipher. But you can determine which processes were running at the time and
find out the exception number as a launching point for further research if so
desired.
When looking at the log file, each error is added to the bottom of the document
so the older errors come first. A quick way of scrolling through the errors is
to do a search for the word “when”. This will take you to each occurrence of the
word “when” which precedes each date of each error.
The next time you see Dr. Watson in action, click on the “details” and see what
just happened. Go ahead and send the report to Microsoft and follow any
instructions Microsoft may give you. Oftentimes by sending a report, you can get
more information about your error.
