Error 10

Description – USB, or Universal Serial Bus, has become a popular standard for connecting many different types of device to users' computers. Many peripherals including the keyboard, mouse, and mass storage devices have all had USB versions made available for some time. It is a quick and convenient method of attaching hardware or peripherals to any compatible computer.

This convenience is not without its occasional problems, however. Many scenarios can lead to errors with USB connections and while the first step to take in order to combat these errors should be to check the USB connection itself, there is often a bigger problem.

Associated Errors – One of the more common errors involving USB devices is the error message “This Device Cannot Start. (error 10)”. This error message is displayed in the Hardware Device Manager of Windows and simply means that the USB device can not be properly identified or used and does not provide much more in the way of clarity. It is most common for this error to occur when adding a new device or having just plugged in a USB device. While it can occur with any USB device it most commonly displays having added a mass storage device.

Recommended Solution – First, check that the problem is not with the USB device itself by plugging it into another computer. If the device does not work then your system is likely to be ok and the device may need replacing or the drivers may need updating from the manufacturer's website.

Because USB devices are typically plug and play it should be possible to “reset” the device to remove the error. If you have determine that the USB device works in another machine and the problem is with your computer then open the Device Manager, select the device and uninstall it. Restart your machine and plug in the device enabling Windows to install the required controllers and drivers.
