Error 126

Description – The error 126 message is a common error message, but like many Windows error message it is extremely generic in its use and resolution. Typically, it means that a DLL file or an OCX file is missing or corrupt. This causes errors when a program or the Windows operating system attempts to call that particular subprogram.

Most commonly, the error 126 message displays when attempting to view properties on the My Computer display, or it may also appear when using SQL servers. While these are the more common manifestations of the error 126 message, though, they are only two possibilities.

Unfortunately, the error message rarely gives details regarding the actual DLL or OCX file that might be missing or corrupt. This makes a manual fix more difficult and will almost certainly require heavier research according to the application you are using and the action you are taking when you receive the error message.

Associated Errors – The error 126 message is a commonly displayed error message that can appear for a number of reasons. Most commonly it is associated with a missing, corrupt, or damaged DLL file that needs repairing or replacing.

Recommended Solution – If you are able to track down the missing subprogram then replacing it should be a fairly simple process. Download the file from the Internet or from another computer and use this clean version to overwrite your damaged or missing version.

If you do not know which file is missing then you will need to use third party software that searches DLL file registries to find missing or corrupt entries and replace them. Another alternative, albeit a lengthy and less than desirable one, is to repair your installation of Windows and reinstall the application you are attempting to run. This should help to reset the files that are damaged and should ensure that all required files and subprograms are reinstalled as necessary.
