How to fix windows movie maker errors

Description Windows Movie Maker is one of the more recent additions to the Microsoft family of PC applications. It enables users to create, edit, manage, and store home movies using their computer and other home movie equipment.

Adding special effects and altering a range of different movie formats make Windows movie maker a powerful application that has become popular with its growing user base. However, as with virtually any application there are a number of Windows movie maker errors that may surface when you attempt to install, use, or even uninstall the application. Many of these can be fixed by following several simple and quick steps.

Associated Errors Some errors are not specific to the Windows Movie Maker application and can happen with any software program. Corrupt or missing files, incorrect registry entries, and spyware or virus infected files are all relatively common within any application and can be addressed using similar methods.

Some Movie Maker specific errors do also exist however. One of the more common errors is that the application will close down unexpectedly when you come to use it for the first time. This error is caused because you have more than the allowed 100 DirectShow video effects in use on your computer.

Also, some of these DirectShow filters are known to cause Microsoft Movie Maker errors. As such, they are disabled by default within the application when you first download it. This does not prevent you from using these filters in other applications but enabling them may cause errors with the Windows application.

Recommended Solution If the application is unexpectedly terminating when you attempt to run it then this is more than likely a problem with the number of DirectShow effects you have installed on your machine. Other applications such as the Movie Maker Winter Fun Pack and Pixelan SpiceFX Packs also for Movie Maker install new filters. It may be necessary to remove one or more of these packages from your system to remedy Windows Movie Maker errors.

Leaving default settings for the filters that are enabled and disabled should ensure that you do not suffer the problems associated with specific filter types. XP Service Pack 2 includes the correct defaults so if you do not have this important update installed then you should update this to remedy the problem.
