How to fix .ini file errors Description – .ini files, or initiation files, are used to hold configuration data for applications running on a Windows based desktop. In Windows 95 they were, to an extent, replaced by the Windows registry but a number of ini files are still regularly used by the Windows operating system. Furthermore, the INI file has been overtaken by XML as the standard of choice for this type of configuration file, but INI files do still remain in wide use. Despite predominantly being a Windows standard for configuration files they are used on a wide range of different systems. They are a flexible method of storing critical data that can be used by operating system software and application software alike. Despite, or possibly because of their flexibility and widespread use they are prone to errors. Once the file becomes damaged, corrupt, or missing it can cause serious system errors or software errors. Programs can become inaccessible and you may also begin to experience greater problems with your system as well as individual applications. Associated Errors – Typical .ini file errors include the display of messages stating that the files could not be accessed or could not be read. One of the more common errors in Windows XP is an “Invalid boot.ini” error message after upgrading your Operating System version. As with most .ini errors this is caused by a missing, incomplete, or corrupt file. Recommended Solution – The most effective method to fix ini file errors is through the use of the Windows operating system disk. For Windows XP users this means the use of the Recovery console. Always back up important data before you begin and make a backup of your registry, so that you can restore any data in the event that something goes wrong. Ensure that your system BIOS is set up to boot from disk before it boots from your hard drive and then insert the Windows XP restore or full disk. Your PC should boot from the disk if your BIOS settings are correct. When the “Welcome To Setup” screen displays DO NOT click R to enter the recovery console but instead press Enter to view a list of possible Windows XP setups. Once you have accepted the agreement the disk will search for existing Windows installations and display a list of those found. Select the instance of Windows you wish to repair and now click R. Recovering Windows XP in this manner will ensure that all your personal files and settings remain in tact, but system files will be copied to your hard drive. This negates the need to alter anything back to their original settings. You will also, however, need to reinstall any Windows updates you may have downloaded.
