Description A PIF, or Program Information File contains data pertaining to settings for non Windows based applications and how these applications should be run within the Windows environment. All relevant information is stored within the file, which can include everything from the executable file path to the display settings for the type of window to be used. For non Windows applications a PIF file is essential to its accurate and reliable running. Associated Errors Like any essential file PIF files can become corrupt or damaged. When this happens any of a number of errors can occur, most typically with the application itself. In the most extreme conditions the application or program will not be able to execute at all. The executable file path or another PIF file setting may be incorrect, missing, or incomplete. Other errors include incorrect application settings and an inability to perform certain functions within the application. Some viruses and Spyware are spread in PIF files or use PIF files to execute the threat on your machine. If a virus uses and infects an existing file and that file needs to be removed then the program is highly likely to become inaccessible and unusable. Even cleaning the file may lead to unrecoverable errors. Recommended Solution Without opening and editing PIF files the most effective way to fix PIF errors is to reinstall or repair the application. Automatic application repairs check that all the files and folders required by the software are as they should be. As such, any missing, incomplete, or corrupt PIF files will be spotted and the problem resolved. Corrupt PIF files can be removed manually but ones that you need to run applications will need to be reinstalled once you have finished. NOTE: If you are experiencing errors from a PIF file that belongs to software you do not recognize then you should scan your system for Spyware and viruses, cleaning or removing any infected files that are found.
