How to fix Svchost problem

Description Located in the System32 folder of XP and Windows 2000 computers, the svchost.exe process is used by applications that run using dynamic link libraries. Svchost essentially acts as a host and, as such, it can be used to culminate several different services and applications at once. This means that when you check your active processes list in Windows it is quite conceivable and likely that you will have several instances of the process running at once.

This is an essential and critical component of the operating system on many Windows based computers and, as such, is required for the successful and effective running of many computers. However, as is the case with a lot of Windows process names, the same process name is often used by spyware or viruses. By mimicking the names and properties of genuine processes some infections are able to remain resident on your system without being picked up as a threat.

Most commonly in these cases there are known instances of a Trojan and a backdoor with the same process name. A Trojan is typically installed by the user having masqueraded as a viable and genuine application or file. A backdoor vulnerability enables unauthorized third parties to gain access to your system remotely and can be used to steal personal information, alter system settings and folder contents, and generally wreak havoc with your PC.

Associated Errors There are no known errors with the genuine Windows svchost process. If your system is infected with spyware or viruses, though, you will typically suffer from a poor performing system and you may also begin to witness changes in your computer appearance and performance in other ways.

Recommended Solution Use a virus and spyware scanner to help determine whether all the instances of svchost running on your system are genuine. Any genuine instances should be left to run without hindrance, however, any that are found to be infected or malicious should be removed using security software applications.
