Trouble connecting to the internet? You may have a broken Winsock layer

Description WinSock, which is short Windows Sockets, is an Application Program Interface (API) which is used to create applications or routines. Specifically, WinSock is an accessory so that developers can create applications capable of communicating with other machines via TCP/IP protocol. In simpler terms WinSock is a file that is used by some applications to connect to the Internet.

There are a number of different versions of WinSock available, including the official Windows version as well as several open source WinSock applications. Windows 95 and Windows NT machines include the winsock.dll file as part of the operating system making it possible for the Windows applications to connect to the Internet via a TCP/IP connection.

Associated Errors The most common WinSock related error is an inability to connect to the Internet. This is typically caused by incomplete, damaged, or corrupt registry entries and system files. Furthermore, this problem is often attributed to the removal of spyware or virus infections. Cleaning the registry may also lead to WinSock errors.

Recommended Solution It is possible to manually alter and add registry entries in order to regain your Internet connection and fix WinSock errors. However, this is not recommended for beginner registry users. The registry is a critical component of the Windows operating system and deleting or altering entries incorrectly can cause even more serious errors.

There are automated utilities that scan the Windows registry and system folders on your PC in order to find any errors or omissions and recover your entire registry back to full working order. These utilities can save hours of research and registry editing and negate the need to operate within the registry yourself.

Another alternative is to repair your Windows installation using your installation or restore disk. Be sure that you make a backup of all important information and boot your system from the disk rather than your hard drive. Instead of immediately choosing the Recovery console let the disk find the versions of Windows installed on your system by entering the normal setup mode (the disk automatically hunts for any current installations) and then choose restore once you have selected the installation you wish to recover.
