Why Does My Spam Have Spelling Errors

Spam Introduction

Spam emails are designed to be sent to as many users in as short a space of time as possible. However, most users and the majority of email clients now have some form of spam control and protection on their system. Traditionally, spam control software used keywords to determine whether an email was possible spam. Certain topics and, therefore, the keywords related to these topics were immediately flagged as spam and the user was alerted that they had potentially received a spam email and care should be taken. Unfortunately, as quick as spam prevention software adopted this technique, spammers became wise to it.

Why Spammers Misspell Words

Spammers often misspell words in order that the emails will bypass spam filters. By dropping letters, including extra letters, replacing one letter with another or with a number or other symbol the spammers discovered that they could still ensure their emails got delivered without being challenged by spam software. While more recent antispam applications use different techniques including heuristic filters and white lists and black lists many do still integrate these techniques with the tried and trusted (if now less reliable) technique of keyword checking.

An Over Reliance On Keyword Filtering

Antispam that relies too heavily on keyword scanning can actually cause problems for the user. For instance, one of the popular spamming topics is wrist watches. As such, emails that contain the word watch within the subject or even the body of the email, in some cases, can be flagged as being a spam email. Whether a user is genuinely attempting to purchase a watch or is receiving an email that uses a genuine instance of the word watch this means that the application will flag the message as spam.

Combining Spam Filtering Techniques

The best anti spam applications combine a number of spam combating technologies. Black lists and white lists include good and bad senders. The black list is often updated on a regular basis and includes the email addresses of known spammers. Users can typically mark senders as being spammers, thereby adding members to the blacklist where appropriate. A white list is the complete opposite and is usually a list of all known contacts including friends, family, and colleagues.

What Is Heuristics Filtering

Heurstic filtering utilizes a number of filters that will learn as you teach. When you first receive emails you will be asked to determine whether that email is spam or not. Every time you flag a message as spam the filter will note certain factors about that email. This may include keywords, sender's address, and header information. After you have used the filter for some time the application will be in a position to quickly and accurately determine whether you would consider a message spam or not.

Spam Conclusion

Spam is a nuisance but it can also cause your system to slow down and can often cross the blurry line into phishing or scam emails. Instances of spam should be reported and the email sent to your spam folder. Most security applications include a feature that enables you to flag messages as spam and report the email sender as being a known spammer. When enough people flag an email address as belonging to a spammer it will become more and more difficult for them to ply their dishonest trade.
