What Is Dr Watson?

Dr Watson is an error-reporting program that comes packaged within the Windows operating system. As well as being able to report any program errors you suffer directly to Windows it can also help to debug the files, fix the programs, and cure any errors or problems you may be suffering. There are two versions of the Dr Watson program; the original Dr Watson was shipped with earlier Windows NT versions, while Dr Watson 32 is the Windows XP included application. Both perform similar tasks and functions, however, it is recommended that you use the appropriate version dependent on your current operating system.

Using The Dr Watson Error Debugger

When program errors occur Dr Watson should start up automatically. When a program occurs you receive a dialogue box reporting the fault with your operating system or program. This box also asks if you would like to report the problem in a bid to find a possible resolution to the problem. If no solution can be found immediately, you should contact Microsoft support personnel to aid you further. Because the contents of the error report are considered private and confidential, the specific details related to the problem are not passed on.

Using The Information In Dr Watson Logs

In the event that you do need to contact support personnel you should find the Dr Watson log that gives details of the problem. Using this information, Microsoft support will be able to give a detailed answer to your query. Unless you have changed from the default settings your log can be found at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINNT\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson. The log is named Drwtsn32.log if you use the XP operating system or Drwatson.log for older systems.

Replacing The Blue Screen Of Death

The Dr Watson method of error reporting has substantially improved the problems that we might have otherwise encountered. Before Dr Watson was resolving issues on our behalf, the blue screen of death, as it has become none too affectionately known, would be issued. Once you submit a Dr Watson error report to Microsoft, some minor details are taken from your system. Specifically, the error report includes your operating system, programs, and processes that were running at the time of the error, and precisely what you were doing. If the same or a similar problem has been reported by other users and a solution is known you will be directed to a website that contains these details. If you are the first then the information is logged and worked on. If the error concerned another, third party program then the details are also forwarded to that third party for their attention and action.
