Norton Antivirus Fixes for Windows 2000

This tutorial is for users running Windows 2000. If you are running any later versions of Windows, the following does not apply.

Internal program errors can occur whether you have just installed Norton Antivirus 2005, or even had it running perfectly for a while. Usually you will notice that upon restart of your computer, Auto-Protect is disabled. When you right-click on Enable Auto-Protect only to get an error that looks like this:

Norton Antivirus has encountered an internal program error and have already checked to make sure the error wasn't caused by an interface problem between Norton Antivirus and Creative Mediasource Go! or an improperly installed version of Norton Antivirus, then you may be experiencing this difficulty because of a leftover registry key that needs to be removed.

Removing a Leftover Registry Key From Norton Antivirus

**Note: Before attempting these directions, you should back up your Windows registry. If you don't know how, search for instructions. Please do not change any files before backing them up first.

  • Close all programs you currently have running.

  • Click Start, then Run.

  • In the box that appears, type REGEDIT, then click OK.

  • The third option down should be HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Click on the plus sign next to it.

  • The last option down should be SYSTEM. Click on the plus sign next to it.

  • The third option down should be CurrentControlSet. Click on the plus sign next to it.

  • The last option down should be Services. Click on the plus sign next to it.

  • Now focus your attention on the taskbar menu at the top of the window. Click on Edit, then Find.

  • In the Find what box that appears, type Deleteflag, then click Find Next.

  • Click Delete, then click Yes.

  • To keep searching for the leftover registry key, press F3. Continue repeating the previous two steps until (including the first sentence of this one). When you see a message that says The registry editor is finished searching, close everything you currently have open.

  • Restart your computer.

  • If the problem still remains, then reinstalling some of the Symantec shared files on your computer may do the trick.

  • Reinstalling Symantec Shared Files

  • Search for the executable program Sevinst.exe, which can be found on Symantec's support website.

  • Click on the link to install it.

  • A prompt should appear. Choose the 'Save this program to disk' option.

  • From the Save in pull-down menu that appears, make sure that you select Local Disk (C:). This is Drive C.

  • Press Save. If you have the option, press Close.

  • Focus your attention on the Windows taskbar at the bottom of your screen. Click Start, then Run.

  • In the box that appears, type the following exactly as it appears, including the space after 'exe':
    c:\sevinst.exe /FORCEUPDATE

  • Click OK.

  • Close all programs currently running, then restart your computer.

If you are still receiving system errors when using Norton Antivirus, then you should uninstall and reinstall Norton Antivirus, or contact Norton support directly for further assistance.
